Lençóis Maranhenses National Park

MARANHÃO

6 DAYS / 5 NIGHTS

Detailed itinerary
Located at about 332km from the capital São Luís, the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is considered the "Brazilian Sahara" for its 155,000 hectares dune desert which extends itself from the continent towards the sea.
Composed of large, white, sweeping dunes, at first glance Lençóis Maranhenses looks like an archetypal desert. In fact it isn't actually a desert. Lying just outside the Amazon basin, the region is subject to a regular rain season during the beginning of the year.
The rains cause a peculiar phenomenon: freshwater collects in the valleys between sand dunes, spotting the desert with blue and green lagoons that reach their fullest between July and September. The area is also surprisingly home to a variety of fish which, despite the almost complete disappearance of the lagoons during the dry season, have their eggs brought from the sea by birds.

DAILY DEPARTURES - THE ITINERARY MAY CHANGE ACCORDING TO CLIMATE CONDITIONS / RATES NOT VALID DURING PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

Best season : Fresh water lagoons are formed between June and September, after the rain season.

Weather : The east coast of Maranhão, where the Lençóis Maranhenses are located, is between the arid climate of the east (Brazil's northeast) and the humidity of the west (Amazon). The area is ruled by the winds blowing constantly and allowing the accumulation of sand, therefore originating dunes that extend along the coast and giving special desert characteristics to the area. However, that look is modified by the abundant rains of the rain season.
