On February 17th the restoration of Rio de Janeiros Statue of Christ the Redeemer begins, with its completion around the 30th May.
The work will include replacement of the mosaic covering the statue, stone cleaning to remove stains, and inside the concrete and steel structure will be strengthened. There will be periods when the Statue will be completely covered with scaffolding and a see-through protective screen allowing visitors to enjoy part of the Statue, the observatory will remain clear to visitors access to admire the scenery. As the work depends on weather conditions (subject to rain and strong winds) it is not possible to guarantee the dates on which the Statue will be fully covered.
The above information was reconfirmed by the Corcovado Train Company, the Archdiocese (responsible for the statue of Christ) and also the company which holds the contract for the restoration works.
